The Oxjam Aldershot Takeover team had a hugely successful first official fundraising activity that took place during Farnham Carnival, 27th June 2015, at the Marlborough Head, Farnham. The one day family friendly music event helped raise vital funds towards the main wrist banded event, taking place October 17th 2015.
Thanks to several volunteers who helped with the event, including musicians, equipment lenders, tech guys, cake makers, procession volunteers, on site event managers, Face painters and the Marlborough Head itself, £317 was raised across the six hour event.
A total of seven bands and musicians took to the outdoor stage. The fundraising day was kicked off by Coco La Funk; a Woking based 3 piece band, made up of Ben Lovejoy, Rob “the bass” Genco and Adam Mancuso have a sweet soulful funky sound and funk soul reggae groove. Second was Joe Booley, followed by Jon Bental (playing fingerpicking guitar), Vernons Friends, Mikey Riley, Adam Rains and finished on a high with Elias Martell who had everyone dancing. Elias Martell, a Fleet based Alternative Folk/Rock band, had a strong stage presence with a tight rhythm section, catchy melodies, good song craft and an innovative style.
The Oxjam team, dressed up as rock and pop stars, took to the streets of Farnham with a Glastonbury Pyramid stage inspired trailer and managed to raise a further £80 from carnival bucket collections.
Local businesses and professionals also helped by providing their time and services free of charge. Alison Jepp photographed the event whilst Reade signs provided a huge Oxjam Aldershot Takeover banner which was carried through the carnival procession and will be used again at the following fundraising activities. Several businesses in Farnham donated gifts for the onsite raffle; Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe donated a tub of vintage styled sweets, Angel Boutique donated a feather print scarf and Iain from the Marlborough head donated a giant white bear.
The next fundraising activity is an Oxjam Kiddies’ Fun Day, taking place on the 8th August 2015, at the Ascension Church, Aldershot. The Oxjam Takeover team are holding the kiddies’ fun day for the children and parents to go and have some fun in the sun. This event will include different activity sessions for the children such as messy play, music groups, face painting and stalls selling pre-loved toys and clothes in good condition. As well as giving a platform for local crafters and makers to sell their wares and children’s activity businesses to get their names out there too.
